This pottery Judean juglet was made during the Biblical Period in the Holy Land (Levant) and used to hold perfume or other costly items. Its upper body tapers inward to a narrow neck to limit its pouring rate and conserve its costly contents. Covered with slip to lessen leakage and improve their appearance, these were used throughout the Roman-Empire.
Description
This ancient pottery juglet was created in the Holy Land during the Biblical Period likely under Herod the Great, King of Judea or later in the Herodian Period (37BCE- 73CE). A Roman-Empire earthenware juglet, it that held perfume,costly oils, ointments or cosmetics. Like other functional pouring-vessels, its ancient globular body is decorated with horizontal ribbing created by applying an object to the sides as the wheel turned. The upper body tapers inward to a thin neck and has a curved handle. As its bottom is round, the juglet was either suspended or set in a holder. Covered with a slip, its burial is confirmed by mineral, plant and earth adhesions, minor scratches and surface cracks. Slip losses from wear and use reveal red terracotta clay underneath, but all these things are expected as it is nearly 2000 years old, likely buried underground and without restoration or repairs. It is a fascinating piece of ancient history, reasonably priced and in very good condition.
