Antique Porcelain Ewer Quatrefoil Panels, China (18036QAS) $235

Description

This gorgeous porcelain ewer is covered in a saffron glaze, also called red coral glazed porcelain, created by potters in the Qing dynasty as a variety of new glazes at that time including a new coral red variety known as shan hu hong. This low-fired iron red glaze had a yellow tinge resembling the color of red coral and reached its zenith under the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (1736-1796). Qing Chinese potters later developed a new high-fired coral red glaze with orange tones especially popular during the Tongzhi Period. This included bowls, dishes, vases, hat stands and other simply made shapes whose firings resulted in a color range of orange-reds and saffron. As typical of saffron glaze wares it is made with monotone color on the outside and with gold decoration of glazed quatrefoil panel with hand-painted multi-colored floral designs painted over the glaze and interiors glazed in white. This pouring vessel may be more decorative than utilitarian since it is beautiful but has no handle. There is an old but good repair on the edge of the flared round rim which otherwise is in excellent condition. This piece is part of the VA Antique-Chinese-Ceramics-and-Pottery Collection.
