Lovingly hand-made in a folder style, this antique religious document cover from Bolivia is decorated on each side with hand brocaded purple fabric with gold thread and symbolic Christian floral designs framed by geometric and curved decorative gold borders. It is in good condition showing considerable signs of wear and was used frequently as a religious article possibly as a holder of priests’ sermons or other important religious documents. Our images do not do it justice as they cannot capture light flickers from the gold threads interwoven in the borders and its vibrant gold floral patterns. The inside and ends are lined in red material.

$185.00
his lovingly hand-made 2-sided antique religious document cover is decorated on each side with hand brocaded purple fabric with gold thread and embroidered floral designs within irregular curved decorative gold borders. As most people then were illiterate, flowers were often used to explain difficult thoughts, ideas and symbols to the masses (see below). In very good condition and showing expected signs of age, use, wear and minor losses, this is a beloved religious article that probably held priests’ sermons, very small bibles or other important religious documents. Our images do not do it justice as they cannot capture the light flickering off the gold thread of different thicknesses interwoven throughout piece.

This vintage handmade crown-like cowry-covered cylindrical crown called an ile ori, is a mixed-media shrine made to manifest ideas of individuality and authority among the Yoruba people of Nigeria. The headdress is round, divided into sections, and with four upward pointed and curved triangular panels leaning inward and set in a sea of arranged cowries. The flat-topped symbolic crown is made with a wide rectangular cutout for viewing. As it is handmade, the size, placement, and tones of the cowries may vary, but the design is very impressive. This headdress was included in the San Francisco International Airport, “Crowning Achievements”, exhibit in April-August, 1994. The headdress is in good shape with a dark patina showing age and use, some leather bindings lifting, minor insect damage to the fabric, scrapes on the leather, and some missing cowry shells. It comes with a lucite stand.
