Also known as Non-Western Art, the terms Ethnographic or Ethnic Art, Indiginous Art and Tribal Art are interchangeable and refer to art or artifacts created by indigenous people which includes North American Indians, pre-Columbian peoples of Mexico and Central and South America, and cultures or tribal peoples of Africa, Oceania and parts of Mecico and East, South and Southeast Asia. Art forms are generally masks, carved sculptures, paintings, textiles and jewelry which often are spiritual or religious representations.

    This fine vintage historical ethnic Balinese mask is Kebo Taruna. the powerful Balinese minister (patih) feared by Gaja Mada the brilliant Javanese “Elephant General” who brought the Indonesian Hindu Majapahit Empire to its peak and conquered Bali in 1343. His peculiar half-smile, forceful eyes and angular nose are carved to complement his intense expression, make it look more forceful and add energy to the mask. These features describe the minister’s power and confidence. Finely carved and embellished with animal hide and hair for his mustache and eyebrows, this mask is in excellent condition.

    This fine vintage teak carving depicts a Burmese dancer holding a sword with his right hand  behind his head. His attire includes elements of formal court dress: a court cap, a top with long sleeves ending at the wrists and collar with half-round segments, and a skirt-like sectioned pants with dramatic wing-like projections. Also, males and females could not touch during the performance.  As a set, the three panels the Female Farmer with a Hoe (T052C-BLE), Female Farmer with a Basket (T052B-BLE) and the Court Dancer T052A-BLE) would make a unique and charming wall arrangement.

    This traditional but unusual mask (topeng) of Rangda was a rare toy or was used to teach  children Balinese lore and religious and artistic expression. It has wonderfully carved upper fangs, bulging eyes and protruding teeth and, as a personification of evil Rangda, who leads an evil army that instills anxiety and fear. This mask is in very good condition considering its age and use.

    Timor masks like this are rare and characterized by large roughly cut eyes, the absence of some teeth and the remaining ones being menacing. They are stored in the rafters above the house hearth accounting for their smoky black color. Often decorated with animal hide with hair, the facial pieces have either not darkened fully in the rafters or, when placed on top of each other, did not darken evenly. Frequently a bit threatening due to the black color, missing teeth and their frequent lack of balance, these ancestral masks are used in offering rituals designed to drive off malevolent spirits.

    This large rare vintage Timor ancestor mask has huge eyes, a horsehair beard, an inverted curved U-shaped mouth and two small half-circle ears and is an ancestral carving said to  protect living relatives. In excellent condition considering its age, storage and use, its black patina results from its storage above the hearth and comes with a museum-quality metal stand. This mask is one of 3 of our masks featured in the original 2002 Spiderman movie pictured on the wall in the collection of Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin.
