$850.00
This rare carving of the infant Buddha with well defined features is clearly a provincial rendering that uniquely departs from traditional renderings. He holds a monk’s begging bowl as he points to the heavens and he stands on a lion’s head rather than a lotus, demonstrating that Shakyamuni Buddha is the lion of the Shakya clan. Given its small size, it was probably displayed on a home altar.

Known as the Laughing, Happy, or Fat Buddha, Budai is regarded as a deity of contentment and plenty. Like most Early Chinese Republic porcelains this piece is hand decorated in famille rose enamels with vivid blue, red, and green pigments portrayed as a stout, smiling, bald monk in robes with a large, exposed pot belly surrounded by five children. Since the stomach is considered the seat of the soul in Chinese beliefs, it demonstrates his open heartedness. The beautiful contemporary bronze Buddha is rendered in Thai Lopburi style in Earth Witnessing bhumisparsha mudra and his legs in padmasana. He displays traditional characteristics of Thai Buddhas: a prominent ushnisha topped with a lotus bud finial, individual tightly curled tufts of hair, three fleshy neck rings at the neck and pendulous earlobes. He wears a simple two-part Theravada Buddhist monk’s robe that shows his religious devotion. He sits on a highly decorative pierced throne on a three footed curved base. The composition is a double triangle: the three-footed throne itself is a horizontal triangle as it recedes backward in space, and the Buddha and the throne form a vertical triangle. The heavy statue is filled inside with a cement binder, and it is in excellent condition.

This remarkable woodcarving is astonishing because of the way it has survived. As with many Chinese antique woodcarvings, it has undergone extreme deterioration, but in this statue of the Buddha as an infant the face is remarkably preserved. The body was one piece of wood with holes into which the arms were inserted. Although previously infested with insects, the body has worn to a delicately smooth but irregular surface while it is virtually untouched from the neck up. This is a piece for lovers of wood and the miracle of chance, as its current state is possibly more attractive and striking than the original finished piece might have been.
