Description

This large Buddha head was originally part of a full-body statue enshrined in a Burmese temple or monastery symbolizing the Buddha’s princely past and spiritual enlightenment. It is most likely from Mandalay, as it is made in Mandalay style. It was made during the Mandalay period (1853 until British annexation in 1885) that dominated Burma during the Konbuang period (1752-1885) when Mandalay became Burma’s final royal capital. As a vibrant artistic and cultural center, Mandalay was revered internationally for its exquisite and graceful Buddha statues. Combining intricate detailing with traditional red lacquer and gilding methods, these spiritual creations blended spiritual symbolism and elegant presentation with a warm and approachable style.

The warm tones and gentle features of this head exemplify the aesthetic sensibilities of Burmese religious art from this era. Rendered in carved wood and richly adorned with red lacquer and gold leaf, the sculpture captures the spiritual ideals of Theravada Buddhism through its tranquil expression and gentle features. A serene and compassionate expression, with downcast eye and sweetly smiling lips emphasize the Buddha’s qualities of peace, wisdom, compassion and serenity. The curled hair and prominent ushnisha (cranial protuberance) are traditional markers of the Buddha and elongated lobes indicate his enlightened status. This head is remarkable for its subtle modeling of the Buddha’s features and the beauty and serenity of his expression, that are much harder working in lacquer than wood. These are Burmese artistic conventions used to show the Buddha as a meditative and spiritual being, one who possesses internal reserves of spiritual power that is internalized, under control, unseen but immediately able to be demonstrated.  The blending of spiritual symbolism, masterful techniques and warm and approachable style make this a rare and veritable masterpiece
