Description

This container holds kumkum powder, also known as a sindor box, used as part of Hindu puja for social, religious and cultural purposes. Kumkum is a sacred red powder that traditionally symbolizes auspiciousness, purity, and courage. red made from dried turmeric mixed with limes, sometimes embellished with a few grains of rice. kumkum powder is mixed with water to create a paste mixed with water to create a paste for ritual use to mixed with water to create a paste make a mixed with water to make small distinctive mark on the forehead called a tikka. It  is also applied to deities and used to create decorative markings on the body. Kumkum  symbolizes auspiciousness, devotion, marital bliss, and strength. The tikka is said to prevent energy loss, preserve spiritual energy, and enhance concentration.  This powder and other mixes are  thrown into the air during the Hindu festival of colors (Holi).

Purchased in the 1970s in Kathmandu this brass container has a foot with lotus leaves on the sides and floral patterns on the bottom and a decorative rim on the cup. Possibly made using the lost wax process, it has a very fine patina.
