Description
This container holds kumkum powder, also known as a sindor box, used as part of Hindu puja for social, religious and cultural purposes. Kumkum is a sacred red powder that traditionally symbolizes auspiciousness, purity, and courage. red made from dried turmeric mixed with limes, sometimes embellished with a few grains of rice. kumkum powder is mixed with water to create a paste mixed with water to create a paste for ritual use to mixed with water to create a paste make a mixed with water to make small distinctive mark on the forehead called a tikka. Purchased in the 1970s in Kathmandu this brass container has a foot with lotus leaves on the sides and floral patterns on the bottom and a decorative rim on the cup. Possibly made using the lost wax process, it has a very fine patina.
