Description
This paper stencil is a Japanese katagami, (“pattern paper”) used to decorate Japanese textiles with attractive meaningful designs. Ise katagami is an exacting craft using paper stencils to print designs on textiles on long bolts of silk, cotton or other cloth or on garments, especially kimonos. Layers of traditional handmade mulberry paper are fused using persimmon tannin. Printing is a resist dye process with paste applied to the fabric before applying ink, and the stencil’s spaces become negative space on the printed fabric. Popular designs include trees, landscapes and villages, fans, temples, birds, flowers, and geometric designs which when mixed and additional meanings. This beautiful design includes hexagons symbolizing longevity and protection; trees, symbolizing strength, growth and the interconnectedness of all things, and seven-point stars that symbolize guidance, good fortune and protection. Well framed with mat board and non-reflective glass it is in very good condition with expected wear consistent with age and use.
