Magnificent and rare Buddha in Earth Witnessing posture combining Southeast Asian artistic traditions and folk like charm. Made of  copper color lacquer with gilt he sits on a multi-tiered throne with simple monk’s robes embellished with green enamel.

Description

Cambodian Buddha sculptures like this one reflect a synthesis of Khmer classical motifs with influences from neighboring Thai Lanna and Burmese Shan styles. The serene facial expression with flaring elongated and incised earlobes reflects traditional Khmer aesthetics. Later Cambodian pieces like this rare 19th-20th century one are prized for their folk-art charm and spiritual presence.

This extraordinary Shakyamuni Buddha sits in in Earth Witnessing position (Bhumisparsha), one of the four major events in his life – his Birth, Enlightenment, First Sermon and Death – which are most often portrayed in Southeast Asian Theravada Buddhism. His right hand symbolically reaches to touch the earth at the moment of his enlightenment. With copper color lacquer and a final gilt lacquer finish, it displays characteristics of both Cambodian and Lao Buddha conservative and traditional images: golden skin, smiling thick lips indicating the Buddha knows all things, and a narrow fillet band at the hairline. The flame-like finial rising from the topknot (usnisha) symbolizing the flames of Buddhism is typical of Cambodian Buddhist sculptures as are the unusually extended curved earlobes with spirals inside that flare out extending to his shoulders. He sits on a high multi-tiered throne covered with an elaborately carved ceremonial cloth as a sign of respect. Decoration bases with textile patterns reflects local craftsmanship incorporating temple art traditions.

The carving shows many of the Buddha’s 32 “auspicious marks” (Lakshanas) including golden skin; a well-formed nose; elongated body, face, arms, ears and hands with fingers of equal length. His simple monk’s robes are elegantly embellished with green enamel on his sash, sleeve, border and his hairline to enliven what is mostly a red and gilt piece. The masterful face with eyes half closed emphasize his calm and quiet concentration.

This rare and masterful carving should ideally be placed in a special location to enables those in its presence to appreciate its artistic, cultural and spiritual significance.
