Lark has commented that her best creations take place in a state of what she calls “no mind.” Her works usually begin with an abstract expression to which she applies Japanese sumi-e techniques so that the creation evolves through its own will: from formlessness into impressionistic landscapes as ocean, sky, trees, flowers and mountain views emerge.

This small spirited painting is part of Lark’s California Shores series which she created as an homage to J.M.W. Turner, the English Romantic artist known as “the painter of light.” Reminiscent of Turner, here the glowing “natural” light flows onto the canvas in dazzling color to create a luminous spiritual aura that inspires awe and wonder.

Note the striking detail of style: as she imparts depth and motion to the sun, waves and boats by using vibrant and textural brushwork, applying viscous paint directly from the tube and smashing it onto the canvas, inviting the viewer to share in the emotional excitement of the work.
