Description

Lark’s landscapes often feature a glowing “natural” light with luminous colors and atmospheric skies. Here she presents a wide expanse of open area to create a sense of depth that she refers to as a “portal,” providing a peaceful, pleasing orientation and viewing experience to the onlooker. Passing through these portals is a solitary experience that can transport one into a personal, more enlightened state. As she explains, the passage is “something totally unexpected that interrupts the rules of everyday life and keeps us guessing at what exciting event will be next.”

The mood of this painting is captured in the following lines from an original Lark poem:

Just before the sun turned away its face

The flock of lilac clouds flew in

And settled on the edge of the mountains,

Touched by the lemon glow.

And I was alone…
