Cat Teapots

Cats 猫 are often portrayed as porcelain teapots, since they represent longevity and good luck. There is often a long ribbon (shoudai) tied in a bow around their necks in cat teapots which is also a homophone for longevity. The raised paw-spout of a beckoning cat is widely used for teapots for their feng shu properties, especially among Chinese merchants to welcome, maintain, and promote positive energy flow, and bring good luck and fortune inside. Considered lucky and a wish for a long life, it is a prized gift, especially for birthdays. Holes were purposely made in the cat’s tail and head to prevent damage during firing. Chinese characters were sometimes placed on the bottom before the application of the glaze and firing which identifies the maker, and there may be o iron red characters applied after firing. Later versions were made with “Made in China” stamps on the bottom.
