Fish are admired for their reproductive ability as they lay many eggs. A pair of fish (shuangyu) symbolizes fertility, conjugal bliss, and harmony as they often swim in pairs, are content in the water and lay multiple eggs. The word fish (yu 鱼) is a homophone pronounced the same as the Chinese character for “abundance” (yu 余) so the fish symbol is often associated with other symbols and Chinese characters to symbolize the wish for “more” such as “more” good luck, good fortune, long life and children.
