Fly Whisks

A fly whisk is a tool often made of horsehair used to brush flies away and as a hand fan in hot tropical climates. Fly whisks were used by Buddhist and Taoist monkto whisk away annoying insects without hurting them and they are seen as a way of melting away ones problems and difficulties. One of the traditional symbols of Buddhist monastic hierarchy in China and Japan, it represents the act of sweeping away ignorance, mental blindness, and mental afflictions. Because it is the identifying symbol of the Taoist immortal Lu Dongbin, it is also Chinese symbol of longevity and a long life and his personal magical and auspicious object that allows him the power to fly to and walk on clouds and oceans.
