Levant

The Levant is a historical geographical term referring to the Eastern Mediterranean region of Western Asia which generally corresponds to modern day Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey. In antiquity the Levant included Judea, Phoenicia and Assyria and other areas. The term Levant was first used in 1497 from the French word Levant and meant “the East” referring to the sun rising in the east.
