Lombok

The Island of Lombok east of Bali is primarily Muslim but has a large and active Hindu-Balinese minority with Balinese temples (pura) since the 17th century. Balinese ruled the island from 1750 -1895 when the Dutch seized control and merged it into the Netherlands East Indies. Most Balinese villages have and maintain a sacred collection of dance masks.

Similar to Balinese masks, this rare carving is a king’s mask (topeng dalem) with an intricately carved crown. Its white color symbolizes the king’s purity, refinement, and morality. Made from a heavier, dense wood, it requires more effort and skill to carve. Old authentic, traditional Lombok masks are scarce.
