This rare fine woodcarving represents Chou Ts’ang, the aide-de-camp to Guandi, the most revered military hero in Chinese history. Portrayed with black skin tones wearing a military uniform with raised beads, heavy military boots and hat he exhibits and air of authority. His downcast inset glass eyes represent his respect to his general while his left foot is forward ready to spring into action. The closed back cavity shows it was consecrated by a priest and the indentation in his pedestal indicates it possibly was affixed to a larger configuration. A great gift for a military aficionado.

This fine woodcarving is Chou Ts’ang, the aide-de-camp and attendant to Guandi, the most revered and well-known military hero in Chinese history and the Taoist God of War. As an attendant his hands held together and eyes down cast in respect and legs firmly planted on the ground. His protective military clothing and heavy boots presented in detail and the high red and black pedestal with painted gold florals make him a key figure even though the figure of Guandi he attends would have been much larger and important.

This lovely carving of a beautiful young woman represents an attendant that would have been housed in a wealthy home or a community shrine to accompany an enlightened Buddhist or Taoist figure at whom she modestly gazes. Her hands, covered by a draped ritual cloth, extend to hold offerings and the swirling ribbon implies her power, weightlessness or being in the heavens. This truly elegant and forceful statue has winding ribbons reflecting the auspicious phrase “May longevity bring blessings.” Its lustrous patina adds to its depth, softness and grace which enhance the energy in any space it occupies.

Attendants like this often accompanied Taoist figures on home altars, along with other deities and spiritual images. They frequently presented offerings to them which, when tied with ribbons, symbolized “ longevity for generations”. This 18-19th century carving may have accompanied a significant deity as the statue was covered in gilt and lacquer, some which has naturally darkened from age and from years of incense, age and use.

This small antique brass Nandi is exquisitely handcrafted with a wonderfully aged patina. He sits recumbent on a raised rectangular platform. Delicately incised with decorative details delineating the head, neck, snout and body, his right leg and tail are sinuous, graceful ornaments rather than defining features. His head is at a 45-degree with lyrically curved horns in contrast to most versions with horns extending backwards. This Nandi is based on a South Indian cow whose humpback is emphasized here by two parallel lines covering it as if is part of a saddle or another ornament feature.

This delicately carved seated female attendant probably accompanied a religious image on a home altar. She holds an offering plate with three offerings of dumplings or pieces of fruit, possibly a peach trio which is a Chinese longevity symbol. A three-item offering is a also pun for a group of three ancient coins known as tael, a symbol of wealth and a wish for high status.

This finely carved Lohan carved to be viewed on all sides sits in meditation his serene expression of inward concentration enhanced with his downcast eyes. He wears a hooded robe with a traditional shoulder ring and a cowl at the neck and wide sleeves that drapes to the base. His highly decorated robes with gilt highlights are unusual, as Lohans generally wear unadorned monastic robes. This image is more youthful rather than a traditional elderly monk.

This exceptional, masterfully crafted and rare Ming or early Qing woodcarving is the heavily bearded Lohan Bodhidharma. As it is similar in size, robes and style as the Lohan (16436A), it was probably carved by the same artist and displayed together along with other Lohans. Very rare, we recommend both images be displayed together as they were originally. Bodhidharma is a legendary Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th or 6th century CE.. He is credited with bring Zen Buddhism to Japan, creating Shaolin kungfu and discovering the use of the tea plant to make the most popular beverage on earth after water.

A group of 12 zodiac figures as mingqi sometimes accompanied the wealthy deceased in their tomb. This Ming dynasty earthenware figurine stands on a low circular base and wears an official’s hat and long flowing robes. It is difficult to identify the specific animal held here but it may be a rabbit, small dog or baby pig. The detailed figure is hollow and partially mould-made and unlike glazed mingqi, was covered with a white slip and painted using black and white pigments which are mostly extant.

Guanyin clearly dominates this majestic carving sitting in meditation. She wears an ornate high blue crown centered with an Amitabha Buddha in a deep arched border topped by flat lotus leaves. This remarkable Nanhai Guanyin is extremely rare, unique and difficult to interpret as it is so rare and unusual. We have never seen a Guanyin in her cave at Putuo surrounded by with two pairs of attendants that include her acolytes Shan Tsai and the Dragon Princess Longnu and a seated Taoist official/priest or possible the donor at the apex. This was likely commissioned by a very wealthy donor who wished to make a spiritual statement while also emphasizing his reverence and status.

Nanhai Guanyin sits in meditation on a pedestal framed by a large mandorla with her two acolytes (one deteriorated) with a benign expression with half-closed eyes, pursed smiling lips, pendulous ears, and a crown with an image of Buddha Amitabha. Most Buddhist carvings suffered severe damage during China’s modernization and antique Guanyin images with her attendants are very rare.
