Guanyin is portrayed in this gilt and lacquer carving seated on a lotus with her hands in the lap in meditation mudra  atop a decorative footed stand in elegantly draped robes. In this regal form, she wears a 5-lobe crown with a cross hatch design in the center while her hair rests atop her head in a bun encircled within the crown.

Description

Guanyin, Bodhisattva of Compassion is a Mahayana Buddhist deity and one of the three Great Chinese Goddesses in China. She sits meditation (dhyana mudra) hands in the lap and feet crossed in padmasana, also called the lotus position,  with bare soles of the feet turned upward on a lotus throne atop a two-tiered footed stand. She reflects a regal image wearing heavily gilt lacquered robes and a 5-lobed crown. The drapery folds create a variety of surfaces effects that contrast with and highlight the concentration, quiet and peaceful stillness of the Bodhisattva. The sealed rear cavity shows this was consecrated by a Buddhist monk and was likely used on a home altar for devotion, offerings and prayer. This antique-Chinese-wood-carving  is mounted on a modern, uniquely-crafted, frosted Acrylic base that will complement all decorative spaces.
