Description

Figural posts carved from a single piece of hardwood were used as supports for entrances and open-air porches of important Yoruba structures. Intricately carved, these idealized and often elongated figures were powerful symbols of Yoruba culture, virtues, social hierarchy, and leadership. Their purpose was often ceremonial, ancestral, or spiritual representing warriors, kings, or oracles. Some may have been used in shrines or processions.

Based on the style, long scale-pattern armor on the torso, elongated helmeted head and posture, this tall, statue represents a Nigerian Yoruba warrior figure. These details and the elongated head and neck resemble most warrior carvings as does the strong frontal posture with very prominent and expressive facial features symbolizing a warrior’s powers. Exaggerated proportions and size are an essential aspect of Yoruba sculpture and convey positive meanings. Large heads represent character, self-control, and motivation. Elongating the figure, head, and neck emphasizes the head’s importance as it holds one’s inner spiritual power, dignity, strength and intelligence. Large eyes convey awareness.

The right arm is partially damaged and was likely originally extended like the right one. There is also loss to the legs. Otherwise, the statue is in very good condition with expected surface cracks, a vintage patina, and a black metal base. There is also black, white and yellowish-beige paint remaining. Originally purchased by a European working in Nigeria in the late 1940s and early 50s, it was formerly part of the collection of San Francisco Bay Area collector and dealer.
