Hand carved coconut cutters were commonly used in Asia to facilitate the difficult task of extracting all parts of a coconut which were routinely used. Carvers made unique and functional folk art tools using local artistic motifs in nature. This carving with its intricate circular patterns surrounded by florals impart a warm and rustic feeling that would be a special decorative addition to any style kitchen and an interesting conversational piece.
Description
This hand-crafted antique wood and metal coconut grater (boti) from South India is an example of the fine artistic Indian carving tradition transforming functional objects into fine decorative piece. Coconut cutters were commonly used in Asia to make use of all parts in cooking as well as for large fruits and vegetables. Some cutters were shaped as small crouching animals. This one was carved from one piece of wood, is wide with a flat 2 piece stand like bottom for stability, is impressively decorated on the top with radiating circular patterns and framed with pierced floral patterns. An elegantly curved sharp metal blade rises above the bowl. Among traditional Indian carvings, this once common kitchen tool has become a scarce and prized folk art relic of former times but is now a unique form of kitchen accessory. It is in excellent condition with expected minor chips and has a pleasing patina from constant use and age.
