Highly collectible antique dense bronze folk art Nandi hand-bell used in South India for daily puja (prayer) with patina from generations of devotional use.
Description
Nandi is the sacred bull vehicle (vahana) of Shiva and the gatekeeper of the Hindu god’s dwelling. Nandi Bells (Nandi Ghanta). They originate in South India’s Tamil Nadu region and are associated with Shaivite (Shiva-worshipping) temples and regional home ritual traditions. They represent devotion and unwavering faith, protection, and a close connection with Shiva, as well as a spiritual barrier said to repel negative energy. These bells are widely used as a call to and during daily puja (prayer rituals), temple ceremonies, or as grounding anchors in home altars. A grounding anchor is a physical object that provides stability, concentration of spiritual and devotional energy. Ringing a bell is also believed to awaken the deities, cleanse the atmosphere of negativity, and focus the mind. Nandi’s strengthens the purification by providing protection to all participants.
This traditional Indian ritual hand bell (Nandi Ghanti) has a ribbed, bamboo-like handle and a dome shaped skirt with deeply etched horizontal ring around the shoulder and skirt. The stylized folk details and soft edges attest to its authenticity as 90 to 130 years old from the late 19th-early 20th Century.
Collector Attributes
This highly collectible hand-bell was made from a mixed high-tin bronze alloy for higher quality sound using lost-wax casting producing a single piece at a time. The heavy weight and thickness reflect solid-pour casting of older, authentic ritual bells. The softened details and uneven dark oxidation are decades of oil residue, sweat, and exposure to incense smoke which has created a unique patina from generations of devotional use.
