Description

The magnificent Vairocana Buddha image is an extremely rare displaying the influence of Vajrayana Buddhism also known as Esoteric or Tantric Buddhism or the Diamond Vehicle on Chinese art, culture and religion. It is primarily practiced in the Himalayan region in Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia, and Bhutan as well as Japan portrayed in the hand position of unction called uttarabodhi mudra often associated with Northern esoteric Buddhist sects. This mudra of Supreme Enlightenment or Gesture of Perfection is made with the hands at heart level, index fingers touching and symbolizes wisdom, perfection and connection to the divine. This pose reflects the concept of consecration, as the unction ceremony is a ritual used by esoteric sects to mark the entrance of neophytes into their religious sect and celebrates and affirms the newcomer has accomplished required steps toward enlightenment.

Vairochana, whose name means Embodiment of Light in Sanskrit, is often shown as the central figure of the Five Wisdom Buddhas, also known as the Five Dhyani Buddhas, each representing a different aspect of enlightenment and wisdom. Vajrayana followers consider their esoteric teachings to be an advanced form of Mahayana Buddhism where Buddha Shakyamuni is a manifestation of Vairochana who exists beyond time and space.

The sensitivity and mastery of this carving aid in creating a mood of tranquility and peace with a serene, benevolent expression and downcast eyes  The robe’s curvilinear swirling forms resemble clouds, signifying the Buddha’s ability to rise above both the material and spiritual worlds and symbolically place him in the heavens occupied by deities and ancestors. Although made to be seen only from the front, paint covers the back surrounding its large cavity. The empty cavity signifies the consecrated statue was likely moved from its original place of worship and decommissioned as a sacred object. Thestatue is in very good condition for its age and having survived China’s modernization.
