This mask of a king (topeng dalem) was made by a carver from the Balinese community on the Island of Lombok. Most Balinese carvings and masks are a blend of Hinduism and its initial animism.  Hindus on Lombok descended from Balinese who ruled there from the 17th – 19th century and comprise 15% of its population. Balinese masks are often carved from pulai wood that is resistant and easier to carve, but since pulai is not native to Lombok, carvers there use a variety of woods including the light wood in this mask. This mask was collected in Indonesia the 1970’s and was carved circa 1930-1940. It is mounted on a Museum Quality Stand
