This finely and delicately modeled vintage Burmese bronze Buddha Shakyamuni in the Earth Witnessing mudra displays many characteristics typical of the Burmese Mandalay style. His soft youthfully sweet face with slightly smiling lips is framed by a filet headband, snail like hair locks, and almond-shaped eyes are inlaid with glass. Made in the 20th century with the lost wax process in which the mold is destroyed, this piece is a one-of-a-kind exquisite work of art in excellent condition.

This rare magnificent image of Buddha Shakyamuni is represented in meditation position called Ch’ien Pai Yi Hua-shen (the Hundred Billion Human Manifestations) in Chinese, the position the Buddha assume while seeking enlightment under the Bodhi tree. and is based upon Indian models carried to China. The hands are in dhyana-mudra the thumbs touching at the tips forming a triangle symbolizing the triratna (Three Jewels of Buddhism), which are the Buddha, the Dharma (the Buddha’s teachings) and the Sangha (the community of monks). The wan symbol on Shakyamuni’s heart symbolizes infinity and auspiciousness often shown to contain within it the whole mind and heart of the Buddha.

Beautifully highlighted in vibrant gold and adorned with intricate designs on the lotus petals and ox’s saddle coverings, this statue shows how the concept of a bodhisattva was adapted to the deification of “draft animals” (beasts of burden) who were integral to rural daily and agricultural activities in Chinese Popular Religion, Buddhism and Taoism beliefs.
