This extraordinary Guanyin originates from rural provincial less literate China. Not made in a sophisticated “imperial” style, its great charm depends on straightforward forms in bright and decorative color combinations. She sits on a backless throne resting on a lotus pedestal held up by a stem flanked by lotuses facing out in a royal ease (lalitsana) and her right hand is a relaxed vitarka mudra. Her oversized crown contains a framed Amitabha Buddha. Using vibrant unusual multi-colored color combinations, an informal sitting position, simplified, almost geometric shapes for the head and facial features and bright modest robes, she reflects a humble folk-art image very accessible to rural devotees. Its size indicates it was carved for a large home, clan or community temple.

This exceptional, masterfully crafted, rare Ming or early Qing woodcarving is an image of the heavily bearded lohan Bodhidharma. As it is similar in size, robes and carving style as the wooden lohan (16436A), it is likely carved by the same artist and displayed among other lohan together. Both images display brilliant treatment of the bone structure, facial features and elaborate natural drapery of the robes and have wonderful warm patina with much of the original lacquer and polychrome remaining.

Guanyin clearly dominates this majestic carving, in meditation and wearing an ornate high blue crown centered with an Amitabha Buddha in a deep arched border and her traditional three-part robe extending to her pedestal throne topped by flat lotus leaves. This remarkable carving Nanhai-Guanyin is extremely rare, unique and difficult to interpret. We have never seen a Guanyin in her cave at Putuo surrounded by with two sets of attendants, her acolytes Shan Tsai and the Dragon Princess Longnu and a seated Taoist official/ priest or possible the donor at the apex. This was clearly commissioned by a very wealthy donor who wished to make a spiritual statement while emphasizing his reverence and status.

Known as the Laughing, Happy, or Fat Buddha, Budai is regarded as a deity of contentment and plenty. Like most Early Chinese Republic porcelains this piece is hand decorated in famille rose enamels with vivid blue, red, and green pigments portrayed as a stout, smiling, bald monk in robes with a large, exposed pot belly surrounded by five children. Since the stomach is considered the seat of the soul in Chinese beliefs, it demonstrates his open heartedness. His wide smile attracts the children surrounding his body indicating his regard for them and his joy when they encircle him and well as the belief he can bequeath families with children.
