Peonies

Peonies are admired for their large size and color and are called the “male vermillion” and the “king of flowers.” Its three-character name (figuihua) makes it auspicious, as it is the flower (hua) of wealth (fu) and rank (gui) . It is a symbol of wealth and honor and embodies high rank and having an official position and elevated social status. A peony in a vase has the hidden meaning of “wealth and honor” (peony) and “peace” (because the vase is a rebus for “peace”). As imperial gardens were rich with peonies, the flower is related to royalty, also linked to female beauty and, according to Welch it is, “…a hint of erotic lushness.”
