淨土宗 The central idea of Pure Land Buddhism, the largest Chinese Mahayana Buddhism sect, is anyone chanting the name of Amitabha Buddha with total concentration and devotion may be reborn in Amitabha’s Western Paradise (Sukhavati), known as the Pure Land and will remain in that beautiful land free from pain and want studying the Dharma with Amitabha until they are ready for final enlightenment. Some believe those ready for the path to enlightenment arrive in the Pure Land on an open lotus; those requiring additional effort are brought to the Pure Land inside a closed lotus and returned to earth to further purify themselves by following Buddhist principles.

She is less formal with bright colored peasant garments, a relaxed laitsana pose with both legs relaxed and bent, bare feet dangling above the pedestal and her less formal teaching hand position. Quite unusual, it is a charming, innocent portrayal of a spiritual subject.
This provincial Nanhai Guanyin sits with her palms at her heart in anjali mudra, a mudra of offering rarely used for Nanhai Guanyin. She sits on a two tiered lotus throne on a lotus at the entrance to her Tidal Cave on Putuo under a craggy rock outcrop framed by pierced openwork. Placed on a home altar, her modest presentation reflect local beliefs to resonate with provincial populations.

Her 5-lobed crown is centered with radiating bars symbolizing Amitabha Buddha and his aureole that represents the flames of Buddhism.
Nanhai Guanyin in her Cave in lalitsana, below draped moss arch holding a scrolls with vial of tears of her humanity and parrot, her constant companion. Small Nanhai images with all these symbols in this condition are very rare.
The most distinguishing feature of this finely carved Nanhai Guanyin is her elaborate scalloped crown centered by the Amitabha Buddha of Infinite light. In Pure Land Buddhism crowns are believed to bestow a divine and solemn quality to Guanyin images. This serene yet elegant carving is perfect to enhance any personal meditative space.
