Zhenwu

Zhenwu (aka Chen-Wu, Bei Di, Xuantian Shangdi, Xuanwu, Wuandi, and Zhenwudadi) has many names and titles: The Dark Warrior(Genbu) or Perfected Warrior, Northern Emperor, the Supreme Lord of the Dark Heavens, and in much of China and parts of Taiwan, Zhenwu the True Warrior and Guardian of the Four Directions. Zhenwu is a revered Chinese Taoist deity venerated for his ability to heal and protect China and its emperor and suppress demonic forces . As a syncretic deity, he was a significant figure in the Buddhist pantheon and was considered a mighty exorcist in Chinese Popular Religion. He is still venerated today as a stellar god and one the most powerful ministers of the Jade Emperor. He is usually depicted in metal statues in imperially sanctioned images seated barefoot on a throne with a snake and tortoise beneath him, while Popular Religion images are carved wood in less formal poses.
