This authentic blackened elongated anthropomorphic oval ritual mask is strongly associated with animist traditions of the West Timor Atoni people. Its simple geometric features, broad face, and animal hide are distinctive Antoni minimalist carving traditions.

Description

The mask is highly characteristic of artistic and cultural animist traditions of the West Timor Atoni people. The anthropomorphic oval stylized face has a prominent vertical nose, arched forehead with narrow carved eye slits highlighted with stitched animal hide. Used in ritual performances, ancestor veneration, and protection ceremonies, Timor masks were danced in fertility, harvest, and funerary rituals. Also linked to household shrines, they are stored above home hearths which accounts for their smokey black color and losses of hair on the animal hides. The attachment holes around the eyes, mouth, and elsewhere suggest it was likely adorned with other decorative materials and part of a costume. Based on wear, patina, and style, this probably dates from the early to mid-20th century (circa 1920–1950). Nineteenth century masks are rarer and show a heavier encrusted patina, while later pieces (post-1970s) are smoother and less worn.

AI Summary Comments

AI rates this piece as Highly Collectible Ethnographic Art for the following reasons:

The mask distinctly reflects the animist traditions of the West Timor Atoni people. Indicators of authenticity include the animal hide stitched with fiber above and below the mouth, as in genuine village masks mustache and beards were added to indicate ancestral status or to highlight specific ritual roles. Its rich surface patina and visible traces of ritual wear attest to its long use in community life. Age is seen on the surface’s dark matte finish and natural black patina from indoor cooking smoke. Wear on the outer rim is where the mask was handled and rested against faces. The side holes show how it was traditionally mounted or tied to a costume. The interior rough surface shows handling, use and age and irregular hollows are from a hand-adze or gouge tool. The rim and edges have evidence where the mask was held, handled, and/or rested against a face. The wire across the center is a modern addition wrapped around the original side holes, indicating it was made for wall display by a western collector.
