Charming miniature pitcher probably used in a restaurant or home kitchen as a dispenser for soy sauce, oils or other liquids. Elegant shape, covered with chrysanthemums, plantain leaves and bindweed vines with lotus bud on top.

Description

This charming miniature ewer or small pitcher made during the Tongzhi Period (1856-1875) was used to pour soy sauce, oils or other liquids. The spout and handle are elegantly curved. Thick cobalt blue designs are set on a spotted grey ground with a chrysanthemum on each side with abstract plantain curved vertical leaf designs below. With an elegantly curved spout and handle it is covered with chrysanthemums, plantain curved vertical leaves and bindweed. Chrysanthemums symbolize longevity and growing them is seen as praiseworthy for the elderly. They represent the hope for a happy and engaged life. The flower is said to be very healthy and life-sustaining tea made from its petals are said to extend life and encourage good health.Common on blue and white porcelains, bindweed vines wrap around the side, neck and lid and above the flower. As bindweed wraps around pine trees when it grows, it is a symbol of attachments formed in love and marriage. The lid has a lotus shaped bud atop for lifting.

In good condition the lid’s underside has century old stains from soy, oil or other dark liquids attesting to its age and use along with .minor chips, spotting and some discoloration. The bottom has a Chinese antique export seal.
