Antique Ethiopian Coin Silver Fleury Cross (E338ZCE) $175

This wonderful Coptic Cross is in the form of a fleury or floriated trefoil cross with the end of each arm splayed into three pointed lobes representing the Trinity. The body is embellished with parallel rows of small granulates which results in a vibrant textured surface. The chain is not included.

No other region has produced the quantity, quality, and diversity as the crosses from the Africa Ethiopian-Highlands, the second nation to adopt Christianity as its official religion. Ethiopian pendant crosses were made in a variety of sizes, designs, styles, and ornamentation which are metaphors for the religious beliefs, ideology, and practices of the Ethiopian Church readily recognized by devotees.  This cross is a modified Fleury Cross or floriated trefoil cross with the end of each arm splayed into three pointed lobes with decorative clusters of three bosses that represent the Trinity and when combined, represent the 12 Apostles who spread the message of the Gospel. The trinity is also reflected in its tri-partite designs and by repeating basic motifs three times. The body of the cross is centered with a square and embellished with parallel rows of small granulates, which results in a wonderfully textured surface. Although new motifs and design elements have been added over time, makers of this crosses have retained the fundamental forms, and symbols in their individualized creations. Made using the lost wax technique from coin silver with attached granulates and an attached suspension loop allowing a chain or cord to be threaded through it, this pendant with fine patina is a one-of-a-kind piece.
