This finely carved vintage jauk mask is the manis (sweet, softer) version of a jauk mask. It and the dance present the gentle traits of a giant having more normal human features and a smile, and its white color is usually symbolic of purity. Those colored red or orange represent one easy to anger. Collected in the 1970s in Lombok, this mask is rare as then Lombok the Balinese community usually did not sell their masks. It has a fine aged patina with expected hairline cracks and frayed eyebrows consistent with its age and use.
Description
Balinese carvings and masks are ethnic folk art and a blend of Hinduism and its initial animism. Most masks made in Bali are from pulai wood that rarely cracks and is easier to carve. As it is not native to Lombok, carvers there use a variety of woods some of which were dense with others light. Jauk masks are said to stem from Balinese mythology before the arrival of Hinduism. There are two types: the jauk manis (sweet) like this mask is a softer, more approachable giant while jauk keras (strong) is more coarse and scary. The dance highlight is when the dancer moves quickly toward children shaking his hands and long fingernails, and they scream and scamper away in fear even though they know he is coming. Village temples have a yearly celebration of their founding every 210 days on the Balinese religious calendar called an odalan with colorful decorations, food, fruit and floral offerings to the gods. Mask dances and dramas are a way to honor, please and make offerings to the gods. This mask was collected in Indonesia the 1970’s and was carved circa 1930-1940.
