Authentic Chinese Nuo regional folk art mask representing a magistrate portrayed as an elite bureaucrat with civic authority. Finely carved with decorative official’s head headpiece. Indications it was used in ritual dances during 20th century.

Description

This early to mid-20th century Noh Mask represents Zhīxiàn a popular, figure in Chinese Nuo Operas in southwestern China. The faint Chinese character at the bottom chin is 知县” (Zhīxiàn), which translates as magistrate” or county governor.” The decorated headpiece is an official’s formal cap or an aristocratic court crown. Magistrates represent authority on earth and are typically portrayed as an elite scholar/bureaucrat with civil power. Depending on regional variations, he is either a wise, benevolent judge who resolves local disputes or a comedic figure poking lighthearted fun at the imperial bureaucracy.  His gentle, arched eyebrows and slightly upturned mouth present a civil, approachable, and humanized face with flesh pigments, narrow slit eye holes, open mouth to speak, and the remains of horsehair or fiber for the mustache and goatee.

AI Market Valuation Summary

AI rates this piece as being Highly Collectible Tribal and Folk-Art for the following reasons:

Although Nuo opera is a thousands-of-years-old shamanic, animistic tradition, it was  heavily suppressed during the mid-20th century, making them more difficult to find, especially authentic ones in excellent shape. The wear around the inner rims, the structural string holes, and the remnants of the beard strongly suggest the authenticity of this mask as having be used in village rituals. Other indicators are the rough,  showing it was  hand-carved with traditional adzes and curved chisels, the faint Chinese character signature or character designation and the horizontal wooden bridge across the forehead to keep the heavy mask secure during high-energy dance routines.
