This is a really great pair of stone small fu lions with lots of character, humor, and detailed carving. Each of these very joyous creatures has open mouthed smiling faces with radiant eyebrows and tufts below their chins, scalloped manes and bushy tails. Carved from one piece of a blackish hard stone they could easily withstand additional wear of the elements in a garden. Known as the Laughing, Happy, or Fat Buddha, Budai is regarded as a deity of contentment and plenty. Like most Early Chinese Republic porcelains this piece is hand decorated in famille rose enamels with vivid blue, red, and green pigments portrayed as a stout, smiling, bald monk in robes with a large, exposed pot belly surrounded by five children. Since the stomach is considered the seat of the soul in Chinese beliefs, it demonstrates his open heartedness. This rare and intriguing Nanhai Guanyin sits in her cave with internal layers at Putuo. On the top is the donor who commissioned the piece, seldomly placed within the Guanyin tableau.Two levels of attendant pairs flank her: the upper with her two acolytes Longnu, (the Dragon Princess) on her right holding a flaming gem, and Shan Tsai (Sudhana) on her left with hands, now missing, clasped in anjali mudra of reverence and two generic attendants are on the on the bottom. This work is truly remarkable in its execution and iconography.
