Tudi Gong

Often referred to as the Earth God or Lord of Land, Tudi Gong (Tu Di, Tu Gong, and Dabo Gong) is the lowest-ranking yet one of the most-widely worshipped Taoist and Popular Folk Religion deities. Tudi’s jurisdiction was limited to a single place such as a temple, public building, private home or a even field and every city, village, town, community and farm had its own unique Tudi Gong image which protected common people – farmers, businessmen, shopkeepers, homemakers – and their community during crises like drought or famine and controlled their prosperity and fortune. Portrayed as a benign and friendly old man with a voluminous beard he is often accompanied by his wife Tudi Po. See Blog: Tudi Gong: the Taoist and Popular Religion Earth God.

This vibrant and finely carved wood statue is the old good-natured Earth God Tudi Gong once found in most rural communities throughout China. He is a kind and benevolent god as seen by his good natured features, believed to live in and help residents of small villages, especially for issues relating to agriculture or wealth.   As an administrator he sits on a horseshoe chair wearing officials clothes and carries a tael, a gold bar that symbolizes a wish for wealth. With his sweet and unpretentious demeanor, he looks like someone you just like to hang out with. Once in every village and most homes, these charming images have, like all Taoist deity images, become scarce.

This antique stone Tudi Gong statue was finely crafted by a local provincial artisan and reflects many traditional characteristics of this beloved lower status deity: a benevolent face, voluminous rotund belly, slouched shoulders, and holding taels to bestow wealth and fortune and maybe assurances to rural common folk. In his past he rested happily on an outdoor shrine, and would be very happy to continue doing so in a home garden to bring prosperity and an aura of past times to a new family.

This merry pair of Tudi Gong, the Earth God with his wife Tudi Po are portrayed as very endearing, jolly and approachable deities who probably were placed on a home shrine in a rural agrarian area. They are dressed as lower status civilian officials in elaborate but earthy robes in vibrant hues – he with a mandarin square of a bird and she with a stylized phoenix on her hat and sit in officials poses on backless chairs with a decorative pedestals. Affectionately called “Grandpa” and “Grand Ma” their advice is sought for personal and community activities and in times of crisis. Just being in their presence makes you want to smile and share their happiness. Wonderful gift, especially for a house warming.
