The doors have a carved lotus symbolizing beauty and purity and the top has 5 bats surrounding a longevity roundel. This small elm cabinet is from Fujian province known highly decorative vernacular for the new wealthy merchant class. Vernacular furniture was often red lacquer with auspicious symbols. In this Pure Land large provincial carving Guanyin is more human and humble than idealized. The center lobe of this splendid oversized crown with gold has a deeply carved rustic Amitabha Buddha on a lotus surrounded by a pointed aureole. She is less formal with bright colored peasant garments, a relaxed laitsana pose with both legs relaxed and bent, bare feet dangling above the pedestal and her less formal teaching hand position. Quite unusual, it is a charming, innocent portrayal of a spiritual subject.

The low profile and fine lacquered finish of this charming antique wood chest add warmth and a touch of antique fine craftsmanship to any setting. The two intricately carved drawers for storage lend it to a multitude of uses. This carved meditation Ming Shakyamuni Buddha radiates serenity with downcast eyes and slightly smiling mouth. Small Buddha carved images are rare as they were generally not used on home shrines, and many were lost during China’s modernization. As it is consecrated it may have been in a community shrine.

During the Ming Mount Putuo in the China Sea became the pilgrimage center for Guanyin worship and Nanhai Guanyin became a new authorized iconographical manifestation. As here, she was often portrayed as a triad with Shan Tsai with hands in prayer on her right and the Dragon Princess Longnu offering her the “illuminating pearl” on her left. This small carving on an Acrylic base is one of our favorites in the VA collection.

Carved from one piece of wood, this triad depicts Nanhai Guanyin and her two acolytes, Shan Tsai (now lost to deterioration) and Longnü, the Dragon Princess holding the Precious Gem. As a Pure Land Buddhist carving, her crown is centered with Amitabha Buddha in meditation bordered by the flames of Buddhism. Despite its losses, this Ming/Qing carving retains its spiritual and serene charm
