Folk Art

As defined by the International Museum of Folk Art, folk art encompasses a broad range of forms – dance, song, poetry, and foods as well as art. It is handmade; traditional, reflecting shared cultural aesthetics and social issues which may change over time; and is of, by and for the people inclusive of class, status, culture, ethnicity, gender, and religion. It may be for community use or for sale as income or empowerment; learned formally, informally, or self-taught. It can be decorative or utilitarian used for daily, ritual or ceremonial purposes.

    This mask is patih keras, a strong king’s prime minister in orange symbolizing a tough, intense and powerful person reinforced by his large bulging eyes, powerful stare, red lips and full black moustache. Personally collected in Bali in the 1970s, this beautifully carved mask is in excellent condition with a wash applied on the back to make it look older.

    This fine, deeply carved and painted Balinese mask is the king’s strong prime minister (patih keras), a position of prestige usually filled by warriors of the second Hindu (ksatrya) caste. The large bulging eyes increase the power of his stare and the outsized thick bright red lips symbolize his intensity. This mask was personally collected in Bali in the 1970s and is in excellent condition with minor hair loss on the eyebrows.

    This fine vintage historical ethnic Balinese mask is Kebo Taruna. the powerful Balinese minister (patih) feared by Gaja Mada the brilliant Javanese “Elephant General” who brought the Indonesian Hindu Majapahit Empire to its peak and conquered Bali in 1343. His peculiar half-smile, forceful eyes and angular nose are carved to complement his intense expression, make it look more forceful and add energy to the mask. These features describe the minister’s power and confidence. Finely carved and embellished with animal hide and hair for his mustache and eyebrows, this mask is in excellent condition.

    This vintage rice paddle or spoon from the Indonesian Island of Lombok was likely carved by a Sasak craftsman. The end of the handle is bird head, probably a parrot, with a finely carved beak and angular cuts indicating its delicate neck feathers. Parrots are revered throughout Indonesia, home to 85 species. This folk art carving is a great kitchen accessory.

    This traditional but unusually small mask (topeng) of Rangda was a rare toy or was used to teach  children Balinese lore and religious and artistic expression. It has wonderfully carved upper fangs, bulging eyes and protruding teeth and, as a personification of evil Rangda, who leads an evil army that instills anxiety and fear.

    This charming vintage figurine of a cow suckling its calf was mold-made in separate parts, hand-luted and painted, resulting in images made from the same mold unique and individualized. Pieces like this were created by provincial craftsman for use in home altars along with favored deities. Although having strong rural roots, terracottas have become an integral part of the life of Indians of all socio-economic levels and many of these images are displayed in most Indian households. As modern pieces are mass-produced, those produced in the first half of the 20th century are becoming viewed as collectibles.

    This charming colorful terracotta image represents a crowned mustached raja – an Indian King, prince, noble or dignitary – with an elaborate high crown and sumptuous jewelry draped over his chest riding an elegant and well-muscled rearing horse with its front right leg in the air, a common theme in Indian art. The decorative garlands around the horse’s neck, green plants, and ground over which the horse and rider glide, long arching horse tail, the twist of the raja’s body so he faces forward, and other aspects of the piece add dramatic energy. Made from bivalve moulds that are hand luted and painted, no two images are identical.

The dark green tree behind them highlights both of them and a garland of colorful flowers draped over the dark Shiva lingham emphasizes the importance and power of Shiva. The orange and black snake at the apex of the garland is Vasuli, the charm Shiva usually wares around his neck who represents Shiva’s power and fearlessness, while Parvati reaches across to the lingham to designate Shiva as the central focus of the composition.

    This well carved vintage Cham dance mask is an individualized yet generic Tibetan lama used in a public dance performed to educate the masses, promote ethical and moral practices and scare away negative spirits. Although depicting a Tibetan lama, it may have been made in China or Nepal where it was purchased. Depicted with realistic, intense yet reassuring features in a slender face with open mouth, large eyes, elongated ears and animal hair for his mustache, beard and ears, his alert angular eyebrows, soft lips and cheeks are highlighted with pigmentation. Portrayed as a wise man in deep concentration, his headdress is significantly painted in red and yellow associated with powerful rituals and symbolizes wisdom and compassion. It is in excellent condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age and use.
