This antique male puppet head was carved from a single piece of wood, and like most puppets, has a tapering neck. With a well carved calm, peaceful expression, downcast eyes and half-smile, it could have been for either religious or secular purposes. Although a Buddhist image, as a lohan this carving is portrayed as a real person with very individual, distinctive, and un-idealized features. His benevolent youthful face sweetly smiling face with downcast eyes is an image of compassion, wisdom and peace.This exceptional, beautifully crafted rare 17-18th century Ming/Qing large Lohan is from the same Buddhist site as the foreign-born heavy bearded Lohan Bodhidharma, and the same artist may have carved both. This brilliant set of three Ming dynasty attendants – one male and two female – are in a unique category of refinement and elegance that reflects the importance and high status of the tomb, the deceased and the family that commissioned them. Standing on hexagonal bases with arms folded below their chests and presenting offerings to the deceased, their clothing and parts of the bases have a rare cobalt blue glaze for burial objcts, two have yellow glazed areas and all have painted unglazed areas. Their removable heads are highly detailed and beautifully modeled fitting inside high collars. These figures are presented and sold as a remarkable set reflecting their original presentation and condition.

Thislarge image Shen Nong is carved in the round. He sits on clouds with a knee up, shoulders covered with leaves also draped down his back. A ribbon covers his genitals underneath his bared navel. His face is set in a benevolent smile, and his beard and eyebrows consist of finely styled curls. Exquisitely carved and extremely rare, this statue would be a prized image for anyone in the medical or pharmaceutical field.

She is a beautiful young woman, unpretentious yet elegant with smooth, gentle flowing lines that creates an air of peaceful spirituality. Every strand of her hair and bun is carved with definition, and in perfect order. The original polychrome and lacquer finish has transformed into a glowing silver hue with a soft patina.

This beautiful Guanyin is carved in the rural provincial tradition: a modest, compassionate and humble deity with a simple “crown” of lotus leaves holding and unadorned robe with flowing sleeves extended to her plain pedestal lined with simple leaves. Her face is extremely empathetic with a slight smile as she tenderly grasping her child who resembles the infant Buddha. Given its size and elegance it was probably on a home altar of a well to do couple desirous of having a (male) baby.

Fashioned in a traditional drum/barrel shape, this unusual and ornately decorated antique garden stool is covered with auspicious symbols, and the positive energy from them is believed to be absorbed by the lucky individual who sits on them. Highlighted with pierced decorations and circular reliefs the upper borders of the body of this beautiful stoneware stool is covered with four bands of apple green, white, brown and cobalt blue – an expensive and infrequently used pigment. The bottom portion is covered in a mustard yellow glaze with pierced and relief images of double coins, tao tieh, and florals. This pairs well with garden stool 16777b.
