    This  lacquer woodcarving is a Guanyin manifestation called “white hooded,”  “white clad” or “white robed” Guanyin derived from the many paintings where she is clad in white. Although wood carvings usually portray her clothed in red, this finely carved version is covered in a lacquer coat that darkens naturally over time and darkens even more when honored on a home altar with daily prayers and offerings of smoky candles and burning incense.

    This charming Nanhai Guanyin sits serenely yet majestically in lalitsana in her cave on Putuo island holding the Lotus Sutra in which she is described. A green vase is at her side containing the tears of humanity, sometimes referred to as the divine nectar of life she uses to relieve suffering.  She is supported by three lotuses, Buddhist symbols of purity, spiritual awakening, and faithfulness. Originally placed on a home altar, it has an aura of calm and compassion that would enhance any meditative setting. Set on a contemporary lucite base is small yet impressive.
