This Song earthenware tile depicts the legendary scholar, poet and alchemist Taoist deity Lu Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals, who sought to discover the elixir of immortality and used charms still used in Chinese homes to prevent illness and ward off evil. He and his fly whisk are auspicious symbols of longevity and a wish for immortality.
This vibrant stoneware Shiwan censer is the central part of a 5-piece altar set featured in our Instagram post. Placed in a special room considered the home’s center it was used to perform ritual offerings honoring ancestors deities to bring good fortune and long life and repel malevolent energy and spirits. Jost (incense) sticks were held inside, and smoke could waft from the lid. This truly special set should be kept in tact in the home of a lucky resident to continue to foster positive feng shui.
This rare vintage carving was probably made for a home shrine or small rice field temple dedicated to Dewi Sri, the Balinese Goddess of Rice. The hole near the bottom indicates it may have been part of a larger decorative scheme.
This vintage Ibeji carved image portrays a simple yet strong elegance with his characteristic large conical head, long curved neck and elaborately striated hairstyle. His extremely large round bulging eyes under heavy lids, flaring nose, full lips, and large flat ears reflect the Yoruba idealized form of beauty and exemplify being a correct and upstanding example of tribal values. His prominent genitalia and buttocks and his sturdy vertical stance on wide feet, thick legs and strong rounded shoulders and arms symbolize his strength and fertility. Scarification patterns appear on his cheeks and forehead, and he wears a necklace with traditional Yoruba blue and multi colored beadwork.
Identified in Bali as Topeng Dayu or Dahyu, the mask of a Brahmana, it is a bit large to be a dance mask and, if smaller, could have filled a series of important roles in mask dances and dramas. Presented as a charming and beautiful woman from the top Hindu caste, she has delicate, detailed and sensitive features, and the carving is superbly and subtlety modeled. There are some minor paint losses and darkening of the yellow paint but its condition remains very good given its age and use, and it is presented on a museum quality stand.
Dayak Hudoq made after the arrival of masks from Java show their influence, but now even masks like this valid Vintage Dyak piece are hard to find. Authentic with strong parallels with traditional Hudoq pieces, it is painted in an unusual detailed pattern while the projecting mouth and nose, pierced eyes and undulating snake-like elements on the separately carved and attached wing-like ears align with Hudoq tradition. Mask reproductions throughout Indonesia are referred to as “antique baru” (new antiques), but this original, later, authentic vintage mask is hard to find and scarce. Personally collected in the 1970s, it is in excellent condition, placed on a museum-quality metal stand and without restoration or repairs except for the new wing-ear bindings.
This vintage hudoq Dayak ancestor mask has traditional Dayak features: wing-like separately carved ears attached with rattan that, like this, usually is replaced; long extended triangle nose, rounded arabesque-like ears and eye-holes, gnarled teeth, and geometric and curvilinear painted decorations. This one of three VA masks featured in collection of the Green Goblin in the 2002 Spiderman movie and is set on a museum-quality metal stand.
This vintage Dyak hudoq mask from Kalimantan (Borneo) reflects many characteristic hudoq elements: its characteristic head shape, white designs on the forehead and face, the curled mustache arabesques and other carved and painted areas around the eyes creating a well-carved, special and impressive image. Made from a single wood piece, it is a transitional stage carving that stylistically reflects traditional Dayak (Dyak) masks but blends it with Javanese mask traditions. Collected personally in Bali in the 1970s, it comes with a museum-quality metal stand.
This very fine and very beautiful vintage woodcarving of Dewi Sri , Devi Sri or Sridevi in Java, the Balinese Hindu goddess of rice and prosperity, is in excellent condition considering it is a much used vintage piece. Personally collected in Bali in the 1970s, it reflects the offerings made to Dewi Sri placed in the rice fields to protect the rice harvest. She is depicted here as a young, attractive and fertile woman wearing a striking, highly detailed and decorative headdress similar to those worn in Balinese dances leaving her upper forehead bare and framing her oval face with high curved eyebrows, wide-open eyes and beautiful pursed lips. With its flat back it can be mounted on a wall.
Most jauk keras (stong, scary) masks of a giant are often red or orange to reinforce a volatile dance with jerky movements. This jauk manis (good, sweet) mask dance is a more controlled, regulated and enacted with more calm and human movements. Personally collected in Bali in the 1970s, it is in excellent condition with expected minor scratches and paint losses.
This fine antique Javanese mask is in the mannered decorative style of the Javanese court in Jogjakarta. His age is expressed in the exaggerated facial structure, the decorative wrinkled skin pattern on his face, the toothless expression of his mouth and his extended chin. Considering its age and use, it is in very good condition with paint-flake losses. Possibly owned by a mask dancer before it was personally collected in Jogjakarta in the 1970s, it would be unique addition to any mask collection. It was featured in the original Spiderman 2002 movie along with the Timor Ancestor Mask (1203) and the Dyak Ancestor Mask (1314) in the collection of the Green Goblin and comes with a museum quality metal stand. The three masks look spectacular together.
This traditional Patih (minister) Keras (hard, strong, forceful) Balinese mask is deeply carved, and his huge red lips symbolize a tough, intense, easy to anger but powerful man in a position of prestige. Exaggerated facial elements of large bulging eyes, a powerful stare, huge, bright red lips and a thick animal hair/hide mustache indicate his internal strength as a trusted minister carrying out his king’s wishes. This mask was personally collected in Bali in the 1970s and is in excellent condition with minor scratches and losses consistent with age.
