Vintage Terracotta Ganesh on his Mouse, India (11284A-YLK)

Description

This charming earthenware terracotta Ganesh sits on his vehicle (vahana), Moosak the mouse, which is  as large as he is.  Although Moosak is generally much smaller, Ganesh in Maharashtra traditionally rode on a large rodent.  Living underground, the mouse reflects the ignorance of darkness and the fear of light and reminds us to always be alert and illuminate our inner-self with the light of knowledge. Both mythical animals wear a rosary and remind us to always be alert and all obstacles of any size, can be removed with Ganesh’s blessings helping overcome them. Ganesh images are often on a home altar for puja and are honored before all other deities  (murti ). His trunk leans to his left to eat sweets (laddo) representing prosperity and well-being, and his raised arms hold a weapon to overcome obstacles and conch shell symbolizing victory and fulfillment. The aureole surrounding him reflects his enlightened state and divine energy. Hindus consider terracotta to be spiritual, mysterious, and auspicious because it incorporates the five natural elements of air, fire, earth, water and metal. Gifts of a Ganesh are given to those embarking on a new life venture such as weddings, a new business or job, the birth of a child or a graduation.
